reveals paradoxical data on Milan
How do you transform a wealth of data on Milan and its social inequalities into a video installation that can engage a wide audience—on a giant LED display?
For Progetto Milano—coordinated by Seble Woldeghiorghis and designed by Orizzontale within the Inequalities programme of the 24th International Exhibition at Triennale Milano—we created a twelve-minute animated video based on data collected by the SiLab Observatory at Bocconi University.
The challenge was to reconcile the technical constraints of the LED display with the complexity of the dataset. We tackled this through two complementary design approaches. On one hand, we used a cartogram to simplify the visual layout of Milan’s neighborhoods. On the other, we drew inspiration from the constantly refreshing arrival and departure boards found in train stations, as a dynamic way of presenting information.
The result is a data-driven animation with a measured, deliberate rhythm that allows viewers to grasp the information without the need for narration. The installation is further enriched by an original score and sound design by Painé Cuadrelli, transforming the entire exhibition space into an immersive soundscape.
